Almost 60 people attended the tour, although some were
unable to bring their antiques. We had 19
antique/vintage cars, although that number was down to 16 by
the second day. There was one 1913 motorcycle that made
a few appearances also.
Friday night we met for registration and bowling at the
local alley. Apparently some of us have not been
practising regularly, so there were lots of laughs and some
sore muscles. Blaze Taylor was the guy to beat, with
Neil Dorey running a close second.
Saturday's drive was loaded with history and well
written up in the tour book thanks to Mike Barnes. We
visited the tunnels, enjoyed a salmon lunch prepared by Yale
First Nations Band members, and then headed to Spuzzum and the
Alexandra Bridge. The day was spent following the Fraser
River and learning about the rich history of the area going
back to the gold rush days and earlier.
Sunday morning we visited noted chainsaw carver Pete
Ryan before heading to Agassiz and the speedway. The
time at the track was enjoyed by everyone. The first
event was timed laps, with Joe Davies (37.5 mph) beating out
Ernie Stepney by 0.7 mph. In the second event we dropped
bean bags in hoops and Allison was the champ at this.
Grandpa George was her driver and will probably want to take
all the credit for the achievement.
Finally, we attempted a "LeMans start." This event
required drivers to run across the track, start their vehicle,
and drive one lap around the track. Steve Eremenko was
the master of the quick start, while Bill Trant got to
participate in both heats because his car wouldn't
co-operate. All in all it was great fun and was topped
off by the ultimate grudge match - Linda Harrison (in her
electric cart) VS all the kids (on foot) and three Whippets
(on leash). Needless to say, Linda triumphed.
Monday morning featured a short drive in the Othello
area and down to Kawkawa Lake, where the residents were
wondering where all these magnificent cars were coming from as
we created a minor traffic jam in their resort community.
It seemed like everything just fell into place for this
tour, from the perfect weather to the light traffic and
interesting stops. The Peoples' Choice Award went to
Mike & Mary Reid in their 1910 Mitchell, and the Hard Luck
Trophy went to the Gregory and Britz families in their 1911
Russell-Knight.
