Boundary Region Beauty
Grand Forks, BC. June 16-20, 2024
21 cars came from near and far for this tour.
Joining the BC cars were cars from Alberta, Washington,
Oregon, and even Ontario. Everyone enjoyed the
Boundary Region scenery and the interesting stops we
visited.
On day 1 we travelled north up the Granby River, with
a lovely coffee stop at P.V. Ranch Adventures, where we were
warmly welcomed. We returned to Grand Forks for a
delicious Russian lunch at the Borscht Bowl before visiting
the Dukhobor Museum. A brief but heavy afternoon
shower was a bit of a surprise, but didn't slow us down!
On day 2 we crossed the border and headed to the
historic town of Republic, WA. The friendly border
guards (both directions) were very interested to see a
lineup of 100+ year old cars waiting to cross. Our
morning stop was at the Car & Truck Museum at Curlew
where was viewed their interesting collection. Lunch
was Mexican, at The Cantina Restaurant. Everyone had
LOTS to eat!
The drive back to Canada was a wonderful scenic run
alongside the Kettle River. Once across the border we
stopped at Love'nder Acres Lavender Farm, where we sampled
Lavender ice cream before heading back to Johnny's Motel for
the night.
Day 3 saw us heading west. Our first stop was at
the Son Ranch. It's a family run working sawmill
operation with an amazing display of chainsaws and other
logging equipment and vehicles. After leaving the
ranch some of us accepted "The Phoenix Challenge". The
Old Phoenix Road was about 5 miles of uphill gravel followed
by 5 miles of downhill poorly paved road. At the top
was the former townsite of Phoenix, BC, once a bustling
mining town. It was a great drive.
Those who chose not to visit Phoenix stayed on Highway
3 and we all met up at historic Greenwood for a visit and a
short walking tour. We had lunch further down the road
at Midway before heading across the border again and
following the Kettle River back to Grand Forks. This
was another excellent route.
Day 4 was a shorter day. After visiting a local
taxidermy studio we headed east to Christina Lake where we
enjoyed a fabulous lunch on the beach. After lunch we
visited a local school before making our way to the
Christina Lake Golf club for our wrap-up dinner. The
drive back to the motel after dinner was a beautiful evening
outing, after a hot day.
By all accounts, this was one of our best tours ever;
Everyone is looking forward to next year's tour!
